If you ever played the old half life mod games like Day of Defeat and Counter-strike, then you may have played possibly the best mod of them all - Natural Selection. It is a hybrid RTS/FPS in futuristic installation settings that are basically Terrans vs Zerg. On the marine side one person is the "commander" and has access to top-down RTS style controls where he can drop supplies, issue orders to the other players, and put down structures to build. The other marines can build those structures with tools. The maps have resource nodes that need to be captured to help build structures, buy upgrades to weapons, etc. On the alien side its a sort of hive-mind with different forms they can mutate into, from fast moving zergling-like things to builders, to fliers, to hydralisk-like things and ultimately ultraliisks.
It starts off with small light confrontation with marines having light pulse-rifle style weapons and shotguns against little zergling aliens. As resources accumulate both sides develop better equipment. Aliens morph into more nasty forms and the marines get bigger and stronger weaponry, like grenade launchers and heavy machineguns. They have teleporter units to get around and sentry guns. While the aliens develop nastier bio-weapons like toxic clouds and acid spit.
Very awesome game, the sequel is sure to rock. For a long time NS2 was in development and and looked like it would never be released, but here it is. Its going Alpha on July 27th, with access being granted via steam to all who pre-ordered the special edition of the game. You can pre-order until July 26th.
